I Have Heel Pain; Is It Plantar Fasciitis?

If you are suffering from persistent heel pain, you may have plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis is a painful condition that can affect one or both feet. This condition involves inflammation of the thick ligament that runs beneath your foot, connecting your heel bone and toes. Dr. Vincent Bonini, Dr. Robert J. Toomey, and Dr. Shruti A. Patel are podiatrists at Potomac Podiatry Group in Woodbridge and Chantilly, VA. We are here to treat all of your foot and ankle needs.

Woodbridge residents with the following symptoms may have plantar fasciitis:

  • Stabbing pain in the foot and heel
  • Pain that is usually worse on getting up in the morning
  • Pain that decreases as you move around
  • Pain after long periods of standing
  • Pain that flares up when you stand from sitting

Causes of Plantar Fasciitis

The plantar fascia is an important anatomic structure of the foot. It has the shape of a bowstring and it acts as a shock absorber as you walk. It also offers support to the arch of your foot. Stress or tension can cause the plantar fascia to overstretch or tear. When this happens, it becomes inflamed and causes heel pain.

Plantar Fascia Risk Factors

In some cases, the exact cause of plantar fasciitis may be unknown. Risk factors may include:

  • Age: this condition is more common in people aged between 40 and 60 years.
  • Activity: Certain sports place a lot of stress on the heel, such as ballet dancing, long-distance running, and soccer.
  • Foot build: An unbalanced gait, high arches, or flat feet can lead to plantar fasciitis.
  • Overweight: Excess weight and obesity can put extra stress on your heels.
  • Jobs that require standing: Occupations such as teaching, warehouse, and factory work, and nursing that require hours of standing or walking on hard surfaces can overstress the plantar fascia.

We believe that you should never have to endure pain. Walking, exercise and working should not be hindered by having to push through pain that can be easily diagnosed and treated.

If you think you have plantar fasciitis or any other foot-related concerns, please contact Potomac Podiatry Group at the Woodbridge, VA office at (703) 583-5959 or Chantilly, VA office at (703) 490-5599.
