Foot & Ankle Surgery

Foot & Ankle Surgery in Chantilly & Woodbridge, VA

When conservative treatments for foot and ankle problems just aren't enough, Potomac Podiatry Group provides state of the art ambulatory surgeries which improve function, stabilize structures and increase circulation and wound healing.  Dr. Vincent Bonini, Dr. Robert Toomey III, Dr. Shruti Patel, Dr. Brittany Mayer and Dr Mark Dollard understand the complexities of your feet and ankles and how they move, bear weight and optimize your day to day activities.

What creates the need for surgery?

Many things do. It may be an acute injury, a degenerative disease such as arthritis, or congenital or acquired deformity. Additionally, patients who have tried to overcome pain, gait issues and sports injuries with more common conservative treatments may opt for surgery to eliminate further complications.

A complete podiatric examination, X-rays and other kinds of imaging help your foot doctor determine your diagnosis and the best path of treatment. If surgery is needed, you'll receive the details you need to understand your surgery and after care, including any supportive devices, physical therapy, medications and more.

Common foot and ankle surgeries

Bunionectomy An acquired deformity of the joint at the base of the big toe, a bunion is painful and often twists the toe toward and over the second and third toes. Surgery involves removing the bump and re-aligning the toe.

Hammertoe correction These claw-like deformities often happen because of bunions or foot problems related to diabetes. Surgery straightens the toes. Sometimes, fusion of the joints is needed.

Corn and callus removal The American Academy of Dermatology says these hard, raised bumps come from friction and pressure from shoes and socks. When at-home methods, such as soaking and pumice stones, don't work, in-office excision with a scalpel works well.

Total ankle replacement This innovative procedure treats arthritis by removing the dysfunctional components of the ankle joint and replaces them with artificial bone and cartilage. Also called arthroplasty, ankle replacement relieves pain and improves range of motion.

Removal of bone spurs Often developing as a result of plantar fasciitis, bone spurs cause pain and immobility. Surgically removed in conjunction with plantar fascia release, bone spurs are small nuisances that are highly treatable.
